Dress progress! It's got new sleeves, fixed the side seams, and I repositioned the lace trim! Will I be motivated enough to add more embellishments before next week? Who knows.

Elegantly, she meandered through the dance although she had most likely even less practice than he. Link couldn't get enough of looking at her. Whatever had happened to her hair — if it was anything unplanned at all — it exposed her neck most lovely and the silky headpiece of a washed out blue drew all the attention to her vivid eyes.

@zeldaelmo has captured my heart with her new Regency fic, "The Promise". I've always been a sucker for a good Jane Austen novel, and my two favorite characters starring in their own Regency fic? Yes, please!
I'm trying to improve on anatomy and clothing detail. Also pulled out the straight edge for an architectural background too. Zelmo, here's another gift. Thank you for bringing me joy through your incredible way with words. I hope I did this scene justice!🥰
If you enjoy my art, consider giving me a follow!

#LitPhilly: The Bridgerton Diamond Ball at World Cafe Live
Dearest Gentle Readers,It is with great delight that I recount an evening brimming with regency-era elegance, modern melodies, and spirited revelry. On December 28, 2024, World Cafe Live transformed into a haven of opulence as Riot Nerd presented its Diamond of the Season Ball. This Bridgerton-inspired soirée allowed attendees to step into the grandeur of the ton for one magical evening. Though…

SO EXCITED ABOUT THIS!!!
I will be at this beautiful regency ball in the Palace of Santoña in Madrid next May! I will be there with my white empire dress and new ornaments fit for dancing! The etiquette is very strict so I will have to make a great effort to go as accurate as I can. Aaaah time for planning and sewing!! I will update you with my progress.

Hello! Historical costumer and living historian here with a specialty in the regency era!
I'm going to post up some pictures of styles that could be done with medium length hair, but how you achieve them will depend on your hair texture and actual length, and how fine-tuned you want your results to be with respect to accuracy. I, for example, have absolutely no curl pattern, so all my regency hairstyles start with wet-setting my entire head with either gel, styling lotion, or both, and letting it dry overnight. My friend who has wavy hair does papillote curls of just her front hair (she does not have bangs), and then pins the curls up to be the length she wants. My roommate with VERY curly hair lets her bangs curl naturally and then uses small barreled curling iron on some of her wispies to tame them. YMMV.
By far the most accurate and best defined method is the papillote curls. Here is the least-shaky video I could find on how to do them:
youtube
(I do not know this person but the method seems like what my friend does)
Second-best is the wet set with flexi rollers that I do. I think that I would be happier with it if I used rag curls but I also have a harder time getting those to stay in because my hair is so slippery. The flexi rods are a bit grippy, where plain fabric is not.
I find heat curls don't really look 100% right on my hair, but if you just want a pretty hairstyle in a short amount of time and all you have is a curling iron, it's a great option. The curls invariably end up looser and fall out faster than the other methods but for a ball rather than a full day, that may not be a concern.
Anyway, enough nattering! Here are the 1800-1805 inspiration images, which are all available on the regency fashion plate Flickr account that I maintain:

1802, These use hairpieces but could be done with a bun at the back of the head (low, but dipping below the hairline), with fabric, beads, pearls, or a turban added.
Tumblr media
1802 French twist, arrange curled ends on top
Tumblr media
1802, Very high bun, front hairline curled and pinned with comb and feathers
Tumblr media
1804, Put flowers on everything. You think that's enough flowers? It's not. Add more flowers.
Tumblr media
1804, Flowers not to your taste? Fine, just do the braids, but do A LOT of them. (I think I have like two friends who have enough hair to do this without hairpieces. I'd need to buy braiding hair for this, but I'm really tempted to try it.)
Tumblr media
1804, These are described as Cheveux Lisses, or smooth hair. Depending on your length and baby hair situation these could be really easy!
Tumblr media
1800, I'm including this one only because it reminds me of this:
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
1800, this just looks like it's rolled back from the face all the way to the nape of the neck, with a couple ribbon or fabric bandeaux. I might try this one at some point; it's really cute!
Tumblr media
1800, This one would work great with medium to long hair. High bun/curly pony, with long curled wisps. If you have the baby hairs to do the forehead curls, great, but if not, it'd still be a really soft, lovely look.
Tumblr media
1800 This one is definitely going on MY rotation. High bun, center part with waves and/or braids in front. I wouldn't even need to curl all my hair! I think it would be really pretty for a ball, too, if you added any of the embellishments you see above (up to and including an entire flower garden!)
Dear fellow costumers, does anyone have tips on how to do a ca. 1800-1805-ish woman's hairstyle using medium-length hair that looks suitably 'period' and does not involve me fully committing to the bit by cutting my hair à la Titus or getting bangs (both of which would be great for the one evening I need the hairdo for, but... not so much thereafter)?
Looking for period hairdos (and people who did them) online, a lot of what I can find in terms of instructions either looks very 1810-onwards, so somewhat too late to match my gown, or is 'Bridgerton-themed' (which, to clarify, is exactly what I don't want my hair to look like, ideally).
A low bun would probably do the trick, but I'd love to know if anyone has any more original ideas, tricks, or tips. Those would be greatly appreciated!

Photos at Madrid's Victory ball! 💃
We attended our first ball! It was such a dreamlike experience!! It was also our first time doing Regency reenactment so it was a challenge. We haphazardly put together some looks, had a great time learning more about the fashion and the dances and met a bunch of lovely people from all over the world. The palace was stunning, the live band was wonderful and the food delicious, it was an unforgettable night 🥰

Seeing people say that we never see the Doctor and Ruby talking for more than 30 seconds makes me think 73 Yards and Dot and Bubble has just clouded their memories because the first four episodes of this era are almost nothing but the Doctor and Ruby talking and bonding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Yeah, the Doctor-lite episodes meant we haven't had as much lately, but so many are going on as there's been none at all, as if every episode before 73 Yards was like Rogue where they were mostly separated in their own plotlines.
#doctor who#dw#fifteenth doctor#ruby sunday#ncuti gatwa#millie gibson#and don't get me started on the tardis bookends discourse#that argument lost all credibility when the same people insisted the ending of rogue be moved to the tardis#for no reason other than they wanted it in the tardis#it was exactly the type of scene they said the season was lacking#but didn't count because it wasn't in the tardis#same as with boom#one of the reasons they don't do tardis scenes at the start and end of every episode is because they get rather repetative#if you started rogue with the doctor and ruby in the tardis it would just end up being a repeated of the devil's chord#they decide to do bridgerton and get all dressed up#we don't really need a scene explaining why they're there#it is built into the whole show that they are just roamers#often randomly showing up in places and trying to have fun#for them going to a regency ball is no different than going to a club is for most people#wildest one was someone complaining why they were in wales at the start of 73 yards#they argued that because we didn't get a scene in the tardis we had no idea if being there was intentional or not#but that is irrelevant#the tardis often just lands in random places and the doctor and co have no idea where they are until they step outside#so many episodes start with them stepping outside and going “where the hell are we?”#everything that could've been said in the tardis was said outside it#there was no need to split that between two locations#especially when one actors time is limited#this all feels tied into the ongoing discourse about shows being longer#which many say is to it in more character beats#but honestly just feels like a hunger for more content
